Caring for Enamel Jewellery
Enamelling is a technique of fusing powdered glass to metal. Whilst it is fairly hardwearing, dropping or applying pressure to enamelled items can cause the enamel to crack or even break off.
It is recommended to put your enamelled jewellery on over soft flooring such as carpet and to remove items before doing anything that could put pressure on these items or cause them to knock against hard surfaces.
You should also remove your jewellery before showering and avoid getting it wet or exposing it to any chemicals.
Cleaning your Enamelled Jewellery
Both enamel and silver can be cleaned with warm soapy water using a soft toothbrush or a soft cloth. Any exposed silver can be gently polished with a polishing cloth - just remember to handle with care.
To reduce tarnishing keep your silver jewellery separate from other metals and store it in an anti-tarnish bag or sealed plastic bag.
In the event of Cracked Enamel
If you do find that your enamelled jewellery has developed cracks in the surface of the enamel please avoid touching the cracks and carefully wrap the item in a clean cloth or bubble wrap. It may be possible to re-fire the enamel to remove the cracks, however if oils from your skin or dirt has entered the cracks this will cause them to reappear.
